This morning the IFEVI hosted the seminar for “The stability of fishing boats and their crews” at the World Fishing Exhibition 2009. Attending the event was the Galician Regional Minister of the Sea, Rosa Quintana who admitted that “unfortunately, the day to day business of fishing reveals the great necessity to develop the basic aspects of naval construction”, stressing the importance and urgent need to address the issue of the stability, with the aim of improving the maritime security of fishing jobs.
Quintana expressed gratitude to the Spanish Association of Naval and Oceanic Engineers in her speech, thanking them for choosing Vigo to celebrate the seminar, which has a great impact on Galicia which, with almost 5000 fishing boats and 1600 auxiliary aquaculture businesses, “is the fundamental pillar of the Spanish fleet”, counting almost half of the fishing vessels registered in Spain.
The seminar “will be forum for the exchange of experiences, opinions and knowledge between all the different areas of the industry that have something to contribute to improve the conditions on fishing vessels” according to Quintana, who insisted that events like these greatly contribute to safeguarding the security and integrity of the ships.
The seminar will finish at 6.40pm.
