The celebration of a new World Fishing Exhibition in Vigo is extremely important, not just for the Galician fisheries sector, but also for Galicia, the province of Pontevedra and the city of Vigo.
Our province is the highest fisheries power of Spain and one of the most important ones in the world. For this reason, bringing the outstanding features of fisheries from the five continents together to the city of Vigo involves both the consolidation of the city as a clear referent in the world map and the decisive contribution to the promotion of the city and the province in completely different fields —such as tourism or the internationalization of different productive systems.
With regard to fisheries, the Diputación de Pontevedra is responsible for shellfish harvesting and coastal fishing. It develops different projects related to organizing issues, new technologies, trade, hygiene, safety, computerization and improvement of buildings and fish markets, vigilance measures, regeneration of shellfish harvesting areas, etc. for the 18,000 people who directly work in this field in the province.
As for tourism, the work carried out by the provincial organism Turismo Rías Baixas is essential for the promotion and defence of the sector. Finally, in order to internationalize the productive system of Vigo, the Diputación supports the celebration of business forums, sectorial meetings, especially those related to fisheries, and different initiatives to specialize the exhibitions and meetings of Ifevi.
That is why we are pleased and applaud the decision of celebrating a new World Fishing Exhibition in Vigo, especially now that the sector is going throw the directions established by the European Commission for the period 2007-2013, and is facing challenges like the legal safety framework needed for the fisheries fleets and the goals that they have set.
