As was previously announced at the closure of the World Fishing Exhibition Vigo 2009, the Organising Committee is studying the possibility of holding the exhibition at shorter intervals at the request of exhibiting companies. "The industry itself is rapidly evolving and there is a greater innovation capacity which both back the idea of holding the event more frequently" said the President of the Executive Committee, Alfonso Paz-Andrade who went on to say: "however the interval will not be too short" as the exhibition requires a great effort from visiting and exhibiting companies as well as the support of governmental organisations.

This year’s World Fishing Exhibition 2009 is ‘the most professional and international’ to have ever taken place

The President of the World Fishing Exhibition Executive Committee, Alfonso Paz-Andrade, made a final summary of the Exhibition, held in Vigo from 16th to 19th September. Paz-Andrade, surrounded by the Executive Committee and the Regional Minister of the Sea, Rosa Quintana, expressed his satisfaction at the results of the event. He stated that he had the feeling of a “mission accomplished” and praised the high technological level of the exhibition, adding that this year’s show had broken all records for the number of professional international visitors to the event.

Health benefits of omega 3s

The health benefits of omega 3s are many and it has proved to improve heart heath, development of brain and eyes in children among others, Seafood form Norway informs. These essential fatty acids are believed to be beneficial to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but do not occur naturally in the body and thus need to be consumed through diet and supplement.

Salmon

Given the decreasing of salmon juveniles at sea survival of Baltic salmon and the poor status of some of the river stocks subject to mixed stock fishing within the main basin, the TAC in the main Basin has been reduced by 15%. For the Gulf of Finland, no TAC reduction has been proposed since for this area, the causes of the problem need to be addressed primarily by national management measures in inland waters.

Herring

The Western herring stock has declined further, following a 2009 TAC which was set well above scientific advice. The incoming year class is only a quarter of the long term average. This stock intermingles with the North Sea herring stock, which is also suffering from poor recruitment. It is therefore important to adopt a common approach for the management of these two stocks.

Cod stocks

The European Commission is proposing an increase of 15 % in the EU Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for eastern Baltic cod, from 44.580 tonnes to 51.267 tonnes, and an increase of 9 % in the TAC on western Baltic cod, from 16.337 tonnes to 17.700 tonnes. The Eastern cod stock continues to benefit from strong recruitment, as well as improved discipline in the application of the multi-annual plan.
